How is it that some people always say the right thing, no matter what the situation? They instinctively understand what you’re feeling and address it. They make you feel better when you’re sad; and even happier when you’re in a good mood. These are people with empathy, or the ability to see what you see and to understand what you want.
When you speak to people with empathy, they feel heard, understood and accepted. Most times, that’s all they want. Learn the skill, and become the person that everyone wants to work with.
Thrive Skills are an essential set of cognitive, social and behavioral skills to enable our learners to continuously succeed, at every stage of their career.
To be empathetic, one has to put themselves in someone else’s shoes. In a professional setting, empathy is about mutual respect and trust. Respecting each others’ time, work space and perspectives are the pillars on which relationships are built. Being Empathetic is one of the most important Thrive Skills for professionals to develop.
Being Empathetic allows professionals to look beyond themselves. It’s the quality of recognizing others’ emotions, feelings and thoughts. Empathy allows one to connect with others, build an effective team and support other people.
Empathy can be nurtured and developed over time. To some it comes naturally, while others can take conscious steps to learn how to become empathetic. Building self-awareness, spending time sharing stories and making room for others are few ways to develop empathy.
Examples of Being Empathetic are listening to others, extending a helping hand, being objective during a conflict, understanding different perspectives and making informed decisions.
